"More than four weeks after Hurricane Irma devastated parts of Florida, the American Red Cross and a large team of partners continue to provide shelter, food and comfort to people whose lives have been turned upside down."
The Red Cross honors donor intent and all donations earmarked for Disaster Relief will be used to help people affected by disasters, big and small. Americans work hard for their money, and we’re committed to being the very best stewards of our donors’ dollar. The Red Cross keeps our expenses low and an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs.
"The American Red Cross has been working alongside families and communities in Haiti for more than a decade. When a 7.0 earthquake struck the country in 2010, we saved lives. And when Hurricane Matthew—the strongest storm to hit the country in 50 years—made landfall this past October, we prepositioned teams and emergency supplies to quickly provide lifesaving aid. Americans’ generosity has made this critical work possible. Thanks to donations from across the United States, we not only saved lives, but continue to help Haitians recover from these disasters."
Over the past seven years, we have funded more than 50 hospitals and clinics in Haiti, provided funds for construction of the country’s first wastewater treatment plant, helped more than 143,000 people through safe housing and neighborhood recovery, and so much more. Today, we have more than 200 American Red Cross staff members permanently based in the country—more than 95 percent of whom are Haitian nationals.
